Underhung vs. Top Running Crane
Both top running and under running cranes are efficient at handling light duty to moderate loads inside your facility. Each form of crane has its own advantages and disadvantages with respect to the type and weight of the load, facility conditions, working environment and ease of use.
The underhung cranes offer excellent hook approaches so that they can utilize the building’s width and height to the utmost. Since they are supported from the roof structure, no columns are required to support the runways, which saves a great deal of construction costs. The downside or limitation of this crane is that the hook height will be reduced due to the location of runway beams. Another point you need to take into account when selecting this type of crane is that the building roof structure must be sturdy enough to withstand the weight of crane as well as the load.
The top running crane, however, is capable of lifting a substantial amount of weight, usually going up to 200 tons. It is the most common form of overhead lifting equipment that travels on top of runway beams. The top running overhead crane is not adapted to facilities with low ceiling height.
Underhung Bridge Crane Components
The underhung crane has generally the same structure with top running crane except for the location of runway beams. The underhung overhead crane mainly consists of the bridge girder, hoisting mechanism, control system and electrical devices.
The bridge girder is mainly composed of the main beam, end beam and crane travelling mechanism. It is used to support the load and performs the long travel operation.
The hoisting mechanism is the unit to raise and lower loads as well as travel along the bridge girder. The electric hoist is available in two main types for your choice, including wire rope hoist and chain hoist.
Regarding light duty lifting applications, the overhead crane is usually operated from the ground by either pendant control or wireless remote control.
